Spring has sprung - well for those of us who live in the southern hemisphere, as we do here at the kennel. However, the bulbs in the garden are only starting to shoot as we’ve had a particularly cold winter. "I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. It was an excellent way to see varied aspects of the island, without the hassle of driving, and with two knowledgeable guides who maximised the photographic opportunities and gave good advice on how to improve my photography. I particularly appreciated the fact that we had plenty of time at each location to experiment with different angles, subject matter and camera settings. It was a bonus to have comfortable accommodation and good food and friendship along the way." On a professional note we have kept on in there despite harder times being experienced by a few of our team especially on a personal note. Life and experiences make us stronger and we certainly see that on our weekly Facebook Challenge with the weekly entries showing continued improvement for those that set themselves the weekly task. This is all thanks to the continued and grateful support from Gerard and the team at Photo Planet – thanks guys we here at Bluedog and all our FB members really appreciate your support. Before then though we have another Tamborine Mountain Weekend Retreat at the end of September. These are designed especially for what you want to cover and we'll be holding a Beginner on the Friday for those who are travelling. We look forward to welcoming you all soon to the mountain and home of Queensland's oldest National Park! New for Spring 2011 is a one day Photoshop Workshop with Julie Martin! We will be running the first at the Tamborine Mountain Studio on the 25th September and another on the 7th October in Toowoomba. And also to celebrate Spring: book and pay for any two workshops at the same time during Spring (September, October and November) and receive a 10% discount of both! (Does not apply to our Special Events due to venue hire, handler fees etc - sorry). Also, if you are thinking of joining us on our Vanuatu Tour next year, a few tutors are looking at doing trips to some of the outer islands including Tanna and its volcano, Santo (great for diving) and Pentecost famous for the land diving. If you are interested in joining us then please contact us with your expression of interest as we are well into our planning! So as Christmas draws near, did anyone say just how many more days till Santa arrives? Have you cleaned out your chimney and what are your plans for 2012? Well we’ll be continuing on developing and introducing new workshops for you while enjoying the wonderful world of photography. For those that are missing the Straddie Photoshop tutorials with Julie, they will be repeated in a one day workshop on the 25th September! And don’t forget with Halloween falling on a Monday this year our annual Halloween shoot will be held on Sunday the 30th October – it’s always such a great night. There will be a prize again for the best dressed on the night! Till next time keep those fingers clicking and enjoy your photography!

Photo Tip: Experiment with your White BalanceToday, nearly no matter what type of digital camera you have you can make some stunning changes in camera by changing your white balance. What it means is you create images straight out of camera that 'pop' and require less work in the digital darkroom - always a plus. Determining white balance does come with experience but we prefer to say it comes 'playing' with it, trying the settings, experimenting. What is it really costing you to take multiple images these days and all the while you can heaps of fun. Determining a strategy for doing it though can sometimes be confusing and its one of the areas we work extensively on in our @ Dusk sessions (see our list of upcoming sessions) with super results. Mixed lighting conditions too can provide challenging situations that are more often than not rewarding ones. Try these simple steps to put it to the test: I Bracket your colour temperature: This can be done various ways depending on the camera you have - some more extensively than others. Even in the point and shoots it can be as simple as dialing through your scenic presets. I Shoot in RAW and Jpeg: If you can this is a wise move. RAW allows more fine tuning in your colour balance software of choice. I Bracket your exposure: But exposure has nothing to do with colour temperature we hear you say? Bracketing gives you more control over richness in colour and saturation. As a rule towards the negatives saturates colour and dialing towards the positives desaturates. I Have fun while playing and never forget composition! Colour is one of our most powerful compositional tools!
Baking soda is one of the best items to have in your cupboard. It is the perfect all-round cleaner. Here are just 5 ways to use baking soda to improve your house, health and hip pocket: 1. Make a paste of baking soda and water, then apply it to bathroom tiles, bench tops, garbage bins, and stainless steel sinks. Using just a little bit of 'elbow grease' you'll be able to remove any stains, lime scale and soap scum build-up without any problem. It'll also get rid of stains from the toilet bowl!

Interestingly, the initial process involved three black and white photographs, each taken through a red, green, or blue filter. The photos were turned into lantern slides and projected in registration with the same colour filters. This is the "colour separation" method. The yellow slide, apparently was never used in the final photo.

aWes C. Skiles 1958 - 2011
Skiles started diving when he was eight years old and recalled that he took to water "quite like a fish". Not only was he an accomplished photographer but also a cinematographer (he filmed, directed, and produced more than one hundred films for television) and explorer. The renowned National Geographic Magazine photographer's sad passing came while he was filming underwater in the ocean off Florida, his home state. Skiles was 52. Skiles was passionate about bringing attention to the earth's most important resource - water. His list of achievements are many. He created, directed and was the cinematographer for the Public Broadcasting Service series "Water's Journey" a documentary film that tracked the path of water through the Floridan aquifer. It was one of Skiles many efforts to increase public awareness of water. During a National Geographic Antarctica expedition he became the first human to set foot on the Iceberg B-15, one of the world's largest icebergs. During another expedition to record deepwater sharks he dived to a depth of 700 FSW for 11 hours in a "Newt Suit". His last story for National Geographic, Bahamas Blue Holes, made the August 2010 cover and his shock death came just days before the magazine's release. In his Editor's note, the magazine's Editor in Chief Chris Johns said of Skiles: 'He set a standard for underwater photography, cinematography and exploration that is unsurpassed. It was an honor to work with him, and he will be deeply missed.' 'Wes was a big bear of a man who had a tender heart. His tenacity to get after stories and make them the best they could be was second to none,' said Kurt Mutchler, executive editor of photography. 'He loved working for the magazine - and the feeling was mutual. He recently told me that his mother was always getting after him to work more for us, and I am deeply saddened we won't have that opportunity.' Of the August issue Mutchler added, 'It's a testament to Wes's photographic skills, courage and child-like wonder in the search for the unknown. He will be sorely missed.' James Cameron's film Sanctum is dedicated to Skiles. Skiles is survived by his wife Terri and their two children Nathan and Tessa.
