Dedication to a Master of the Lens

Photo News:

As Spring approaches us here in the Southern Hemisphere we are sending our newsletter out a little early this month as some of us are off on adventures with our cameras far away. It has been a mixed time in the Bluedog camp with fabulous new workshops and tours being launched and the sad loss of our wonderful Blue Cattle Dog, Lucy. Thanks to everyone who has emailed, sent cards, flowers, plants and their condolences. She will be greatly missed.

This last month we launched two new tours: The Fraser Island Tour which filled in less than 24 hours and the Stradbroke Island Night Landscape Tour. There are three places left for this one and for those looking for accommodation on Stradbroke Island we have reserved a limited number of dormitory style beds (male and female are separate) at the Manta Lodge Backpackers. The cost for the accommodation only is $28.00 per night - this is what they are charging us and will be given on a first in first serve basis.

There will be another tour announced to Fraser Island very soon and we will be running our whale watching tour again next year - keep an eye on the web site for details or if you really don't want to miss out on a place email us and we will notify you as soon as the dates are set.

Speaking of the web site, our new site is progressing well - still a bit to be done as it's a big job, however hopefully by the time we send out our next newsletter it should be up and operational!

BIG NEWS: We welcome a new tutor Garry Schlatter to the pack. Garry will be joining Nick on the Stradbroke Island Night Landscape Tour and will be assisting with our new Sunset and Star Trail Workshops as well as others. Welcome on board Garry.

More BIG NEWS: We are commencing a Weekly Photo Challenge on our Facebook page. This will be open to anyone who has attended a Bluedog Photography Workshop, Retreat or Tour AND Photo Planet, in Southport, have offered a prize for the weekly winner of a 12x18" print!! Our first challenge will be posted on the afternoon of the 19th August 2009, so get those shutter fingers ready!

We farewelled Rebecca and Emmanuel who left Australia after their six month visit to go home to the United States. Rebecca had before arriving here in the great land down under been in contact with us and we were so pleased not only to have helped her develop her photography but make new and wonderful friends - something which happens with many of the people we all meet in photography. Rebecca will now be working proposing two tours for Bluedog participants next year to the United States. One of these will include us working and learning at Newspace Centre of Photography in Portland, Oregon. The chance to learn at this well respected photography college will indeed be an experience for all of those who attend.

Suellen and Nick are looking forward to the Vanuatu Tour in October and introducing those joining us to our Ni-Van friends. Our info session went well - we still do have a couple of places left so if you are interested we can forward you a CD of tour details. This is a wonderful tour designed by photographers for photographers!

The Norfolk Photography Tour is now filling. From the 3rd-10th February 2010 it looks like another great trip where we will meet renowned photographer Robin Nisbet and visit his studio. As with all our tours partners are welcome to join us.

Congratulations to all who have won awards, had images published, sold works and made themselves happy with their photography. This is the biggest reward for us!

Von from Toowoomba won our $100 voucher drawn in July and we welcomed Von to a Beginner Workshop shortly after - hope you are still enjoying your photography Von.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there. And for those heading to Stradbroke on the day we'll try and make it a special one for you!

Please remember, we keep setting dates as time allows with the professional commitments of the tutors so check our web site calendar page for continued updates. If there is something special or a date you would like a workshop on, please contact us as we are happy to attempt to do this for you. As our workshop sizes are kept very small this is often achievable.

We've also been uploading regularly on our blog with photography tips, news, and info being placed on there every week. You can also now subscribe to have the blog updates come straight through to your email address.

When weather allows, we will be at the Tamborine Mountain markets at the show grounds on the second Sunday of every month. Feel free to call in and say g'day.

Keep those fingers clicking and enjoying your photography!
This newsletter is designed specifically for you, to be yours, so please enjoy

Photo Tip: Wedding Photography Tips

Love is in the air and Spring is often the season for weddings! There's loads of vibrant blooms for brides to choose, clear sunny days and a lot to organise.

More couples are opting for friends or relatives with digital SLR's to capture their special day memories for them. So with that in mind we thought we'd come up with a few tips in case you are asked to do a friend's wedding.

I Have a shot list: This will help you not forget any images they particularly wanted.

I Have a wet weather photography venue: Everyone it seems wants their photos taken in the park, on the beach or at least outside where our biggest problem can be Mother Nature turning on a day of wet weather or even a storm.

I Know how to EC and use you flash EC: You will need to use flash and your cameras EC. The more you know how and why to use this the quicker you will be and the happier you will be with your images out of camera. It's a big enough day and you don't want to be spending weeks in front of a computer trying to fix your mistakes and worse still, some you will not be able to fix at all.

I Have some help: A family coordinator to help gather relatives for the family photographs is immensely worthy. Someone who knows who each and every member is - if its two, one from either side then that's fine too. It will save you a load of time.

I Look for the finer details: Look for the images within the images that tell the story without the couple. What about the flowers, table arrangements, that special piece of lace or pen lying across the wedding certificate.

The next Bluedog Wedding Photography Workshop will be held on the 13th September 2009

Checking Out Web Sites:
Fashion photographers may be interested in this site. Though we found the flash content a little time consuming to navigate around there is some brilliant photography.

Photo Trivia: Did You Know?

The world's fastest lens - the Leica Noctilux M 50 mm ASPH - has a maximum aperture of f/0.95! The amazingly wide maximum aperture gives extremely shallow depth of field and very low light capability.

Released in February 2009, the lens currently retails for approximately $12,513.95 AUD. It is hand assembled in Soms Germany and will be one that we are sure will see many keeping in the kit for years and years.

From reports it is comparing favourably with the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 50 mm f / 1.4 ASPH considered as the best standard lens ever produced. Leica claim vignetting and distortion have been improved and the lens performs better in low light situations better than the human eye. We'll be looking forward to a play!

Bluedog's Eco Tip

Live Life the Simple Way!

The key to living an environmentally friendly life is simplicity!
Get rid of all those 'treasures' that you had forgotten about, keeping only those belongings that you use on a regular basis. Have a garage sale (one man's rubbish IS another man's treasure after all), or give it away to charity - there are plenty in need!

As for all that junk mail and paper that ends up cluttering the household, borrow a shredder and create your own mulch for that garden. Go on and simplify your life, you will feel better for it guaranteed!

Dedication to the Masters of the Lens
Richard Avedon
(19
23-2004 )

A high school drop out, Richard Avedon, quoted as one of the ten best photographers in the world, was born in 1923 in New York City to a Jewish-Russian family. Avedon first discovered an interest in photography in 1942 when he joined the Merchant Marine’s photographic section photographing fellow crewman. His first camera was a Rolliflex that was a gift from his father.

Soon after this, Avedon began working as an advertisement photographer and was quickly picked up or 'found' by the director of fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar. Avedon transformed the stereotypes of fashion photography of his era. In contrast to having his models pose emotionless, he preferred to have them filled with emotion, smiling and laughing.

In 1966, Avedon left Bazaar and started work for Vogue, quickly becoming the lead photographer and shooting the majority of the covers until 1973.e has been awarded greatly for his achievements in photography including the International Centre of Photography Master Award i 1993.

Avedon's great interest in photography was how 'portraiture captured the personality and soul of its subject'.

“A portrait is a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion.
There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.”

Richard Avedon
