Photo News: Secondly,
we have had calls for classes during the week and will start to list
classes in our workshop calendar below and on the Photography
Workshops and Retreats page of our web site. Our
workshop calendar will be on the web site and updated regularly as you
make your requests and we are now trying to plan all workshops at least
6 months in advance so you have plenty of time to prepare. Fourthly - yes the list goes on! We would like to congratulate Virginia Ireland. Virginia has attended many of the Bluedog photography workshops and is now stepping out as a professional and is already making a name for herself in the wedding and fashion scene. You may meet Virginia at one of the workshops as she will now become a tutor and be assisting tutors as we continue to mentor her on her exciting future path. Nothing makes us happier than seeing people taking their photography to where they want it to go. Remember once you start with us our advice does not stop when you leave the workshop you can e-mail us with questions and images for further continued advice. And last but not least, we welcome to the Bluedog Team Colin Rayfield and Karen Milder. These wonderfully talented photographers have a wealth of knowledge to share and have taught various aspects of photography. You may be a good photographer but that does not mean you can teach. Along with Deirdrie, Danielle and Nick, these photographers have the confidence and patience to take you on exciting paths with your work. If there is anyone interested in doing an outback or trip to Carnarvon Gorge and the Queensland Sandstone Belt next year could you please contact us to express your interest.
Keep

Tip: Fill
that Frame. Something we often hear when critiquing work is 'the subject was much bigger than it is in the picture - it must be my camera." Sadly what often happens is our mind exaggerates what we see through the viewfinder. We become so focused on the subject we ignore what's around it. Hence perceiving the subject is bigger than it actually is and not noticing the surrounds which are often distracting to the final image or just wasted space. Fill
the frame with the subject. Move your legs, go up, go down, go closer,
change the lens and take the time to train your eyes to look at what is
surrounding your subject before you press the shutter. It will eventually
almost become automatic. Remember all the work is in the preparation -
do a great job in the camera and then there is less work post processing.
Look at Man Ray's image featured here - it is close and works a treat.

Dedication
to the Masters of the Lens Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Man Ray in 1999, ARTnews magazine was named one of the 25 most influential artists of the 20th century. In 1911, the Radnitzky family changed their surname to Ray, in reaction to anti-semitism prevalent at that time. Emmanuel, who was called "Manny" as a nickname, thereafter used the single name Man Ray. In 1921 he went to live and work in the Montparnasse quarter of Paris, during an era of great creativity. There he fell in love with famous French singer, Kiki (Alice Prin), who later became one of his favourite photographic models. For the next 20 years in Montparnasse, Man Ray revolutionized the art of photography. Together with Surrealist photographer Lee Miller—his lover and photography assistant at the time—Man Ray invented the photographic technique of solarization. He also created a technique using photograms he called rayographs. Later
in life, Man Ray returned to the United States, where he lived in Los
Angeles for a few years. However, he returned to Paris where he died and
is interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse, Paris.
