Photo News:

Once again Christmas is almost upon us! Have you got your list ready for Santa?

To celebrate Christmas we are again this year holding our 12 Days to Christmas and already we have some awesome prizes to give away. Keep an eye on the inbox for the daily challenges and all the best everyone.

During the year we have seen so many wonderful images taken by you and watched so many grow their photography pursuits both personally and professionally. Congratulations to you all and we look forward to seeing you in 2012 and to welcoming new pups.

We've heard a whisper we may be on Getaway on the 12th November which will air across 67 countries. Thanks everyone for suggesting us we truly appreciate this honour of showcasing Brisbane, capital of the Sunshine State here in Australia.

What's new in the Kennel? Well we've been working hard on the new web site which is due to be launched early in November, all going to plan.
Our new speed light and Photoshop workshops have been a great hit and yes we'll be continuing them through into the new year with more advanced Photoshop workshops being added and a special new Stradbroke Island set of workshops on portraiture: modelling and posing, lighting and digital editing.

There has been another rumour we may be doing a series of workshops on Cocos Islands. Well, we can tell you this is true and we'll be working with Karen Willshaw, who calls this lovely island home, to bring to you a wonderful set of workshops and tutorials.

Our Carnarvon Gorge Workshop dates have been announced. Check out our Carnarvon Gorge page for more information.
http://www.blue-dog.com.au/Carnarvon-photography-tour.html

For those interested in joining us in Siem Reap next year our information session will be held on 23rd November 2011 in Brisbane. Those already registered will receive an email of invitation. Please if you are interested in joining us email us to reserve a place. For more info on this great trip click here.

This month we must congratulate Annabel Tully and Bunginderry Artist Camp who won the Arts Qld 2011 Regional Arts & Culture Award for Creative Spaces and Places. We'll be revisiting Bunginderry again in May 2012 and Annabel still has a few places left in our Artist Camp held on the magnificent property.

While we are handing out congratulations Sheryn was a finalist in ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year. From thousands of entries Sheryn's selected image now appears in the annual Australasian Nature Photography Book and hangs in the South Australian Museum. There's a copy of the book in the studio for you to look at when you are here.

Many of you would have heard of the horrible flooding in Cambodia recently. Our dear friend Kanha's school was badly affected so we started a fundraiser for the school through the Bluedog Photography Facebook Group. The generosity shown has blown us all here away. At time of writing we had raised over $2,000.00.

We extend a very, very special thank you. We will now be able to re-build a classroom, buy desks and chairs and a chalk board. Kanha and the principal are deeply grateful but more importantly the children say a huge thank you to those of you who donated. During our tour next year we will be erecting an honour board with all your names on it.

David Alexander has worked an amazing feat organising the designing and printing of a Bluedog Photography 2012 Calendar to raise funds for Kahna's school in Cambodia so we are calling for your image submissions! See below for details. Calendars will be ready by early December and will be sold for $10. You may pre order - simply email us. Thanks everyone for supporting this wonderful fundraiser. And it's another great stocking filler for the big man in the red suit.

Gift vouchers are available - need a present or maybe to say thank you - all will be valid to their dollar amount for a full 12months. We'll be preparing gift vouchers up to 6pm on Christmas Eve. It's shopping made easy!

And if you are looking for more stocking fillers we now have a range of Bluedog merchandise: USB's, caps, fleecy's, spray jackets plus we have a new load of Tough Drive's, tripods, reflectors, scrims, flash diffusers, and triggers in stock as well.

As this newsletter goes out Augustine is off on a three week holiday into the outback. Have a wonderful time Augustine and we look forward to seeing your images!

Our Dedication to a Master of the Lens is this month written by another of our work place students - Nika. We've enjoyed having the students throughout the year and assisting them on their journey.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year!

'Til next time keep those fingers clicking and enjoy your photography!

'Each of you had time for each of us, and you seemed to do that so easily despite being bombarded with questions from all angles! You were all so approachable :) '. Jill

Below are the details if you wish to send an image in for consideration.
Calendars may be pre-ordered and will be on sale for $10.00 + postage if applicable.

Photo Tip: Dive into your Beach Photography this summer

With the announcement of our Cocos Island Tour and summer fast approaching us here based in the southern hemisphere it's time for surf, sand and sun and fun days at the beach!

Beach photography can present many wonderful opportunities and at times be challenging.
Here are a couple of tips to help you take that frustration out of your photography on the beach this summer.

  1. Time of the day.
Dawn and dusk are some of the best times. Usually there are more clouds (which help create dramatic images), less people and the sun is at an angle emphasising textures and shadows.
Night can be turned into day. Try creating night landscapes – it is fun!
  2. Give your subject room to move.
If it’s a surfer surfing the waves, children running along the beach, fisherman fishing: give the action room to move.

  3. Don’t forget the thirds.
One of the most important items of any image is how it is composed. Ask yourself what is most important: the land, sea and sky and frame to suit not leaving broad spaces of nothing such as a long unbroken horizon. This is even worse if the horizon is not straight.

  4. Pop the flash.
Particularly helpful if you are photographing people with hats on and their faces in shadow. Even if you have a point and shoot pop that flash.
Their face will now not be a black blob.

  5. Work with reflections.
They are so much fun! The best way to often see them is to get down low especially in the wet sand.
Use a UV or Protector Filter to protects your lens against salt and sand.
A polariser filter is a must. This filter reduces reflections, increases colour saturation and contrast and is another we have on every lens.

  6. Protect your gear.
Salt and sand are corrosive and could mean the death of your camera. At the end of the day when the camera is put away avoid leaving it anywhere in bright sunlight. Wash your tripod and carry a short stiff brush, blower and cleaning kit to clean your camera and lenses.

  7. Use Foreground Interest and have your focal point nice and large.
Foreground interest could be some driftwood, a boat, a shell.

1923 Leica Sells for $1.9 Million
After a mere 20 minutes of bidding at Vienna's WestLicht auction house,
a vintage Leica O-series camera made history when sold for a record breaking 1.1 million Euros. Pre auction estimates of 350,000-450,000 Euros were smashed. The buyer, from Asia, wishes and remains anonymous.

There wer only 25 made of this series in 1923 and the camera was reported to be in full working order. Leica made the camera to test the market before beginning commercial production of cameras under the name of Leica.

Dedication to a Master of the Lens
Mathew Brady (1822 - 1896)

Our Dedication to a Master of the Lens this issue was written by Nika during her work experience with Bluedog photography this year.

Mathew Brady was an American photographer, who has been referred to by many as the father of photojournalism. He is best known for his documentation of the American Civil War. Brady’s first popular photographs of the Civil War were the First Battle of the Bull Run, during which he only just narrowly avoided capture. He later employed 23 men to photograph scenes from the Civil War and rarely visited the battlefields personally, it has been speculated that this was partly due to the deterioration of Brady’s eyesight in the 1850s.

In 1862, Brady presented an exhibition titled “The Dead of Antietam” in New York. Many of the photographs presented in this exhibition were graphic photos of corpses. These photos gave many Americans the opportunity to see the horrors of the Civil War battlefields. Soon after Brady’s popularity declined as the public lost interest in viewing photos of the war. "My greatest aim has been to advance the art of photography and to make it what I think I have, a great and truthful medium of history."
During his career Brady photographed 18 presidents, including Abraham Lincoln. His portraits of Lincoln have been used for the Lincoln penny and the American five dollar bill. He also photographed most of the well known Union Civil War Generals, Thomas Edison (inventor), Mark Twain (author), King Edward VII of England, and many other important people.

Nobody in the history of photography could claim to have taken more photographs of important historical personalities during the 19th century than Mathew Brady.

Brady produced over seven thousand pictures, many of which were lost or destroyed. Towards the end of his life Brady was quoted to have said "No one will ever know what they cost me; some of them almost cost me my life." Brady died January 1896.

"My greatest aim has been to advance the art of photography and to make it what I think I have, a great and truthful medium of history."Mathew B. Brady
