Photo News:The year is well and truly underway with now February done and dusted and it looks like 2009 is going to be a great year for all! Since our last newsletter we've been here and there including to Samoa where our lead image this issue comes from. Can you believe this coconut is lying under the water? We also ventured into the ancient forest around Crystal Creek, visited Mt Warning and held our workshop in Injune which was absolutely fantastic - what a keen crew they are out there! There's a few images on our Recent Adventures page for you to check out. We are now organising a field trip with the wonderful people at Injune to Lonesome National Park in May. Details off this will be posted to our Retreats & Workshops page shortly. On the workshop front we are preparing for our weekend retreat later this month on Tamborine Mountain and our Brisbane @ Dusk workshops are being extended plus we are adding day sessions in Brisbane to keep our city shutter fingers actively clicking. Planning is also underway for a shoot out at the Holden Driving Centre and V8 Super School and with some very talented bike riders - we'll be keeping you posted.
The Vanuatu trip is looking great! We'll be visiting a local village, food markets and the beautiful Mele Cascades waterfalls so plenty of opportunities to capture some stunning images. We are proud to announce we have become an affiliate with Amazon Book Store and now have a page dedicated to Photography and Travel Books. Check out it out! Our featured book this month is 'Silence & Solitude'. We do enjoy seeing your images. Here's a few we have received recently.
Don't Forget! l Tamborine Country Markets: Each second Sunday of the month, weather permitting, we will be at the Tamborine Mountain Showgrounds where the Country Markets are held. Drop in and see us, there will be a spare seat and we'll happily chat about anything you like: knitting, sailing, golf, even photography! l If you have an eco tip or an interesting web site we'd love to feature it on the newsletter. Photo Trivia: Did You Know? The first candid camera was Ermanox launched in July 1924 and often marketed as the the Ernox. It was made by Ernemann in Dresden. It made exposures on 4.5 × 6 cm glass plates and initially had an f/2.0 and later an f/1.8 lens. This fast lens made for the first time a handy, unobtrusive camera able to capture images in dim light. The first version has a rigid metal body covered with black leather and a cloth shutter focal-plane shutter - a worthy collectors item today. The marketing slogan was "What you see, you can photograph."It was made famous by Dr. Erich Salomon, a photo reporter during which time he made snapshots of many famous politicians, diplomats, film stars and other famous people. The Ermanox was eventually overtaken in popularity by 35 mm cameras, notably the Leica (for which a f/1.9 lens was available by 1932) and Contax (1932- ), which were smaller and used the more practical roll-film.

Bluedog's Eco TipEco Friendly Gardening: l Start companion planting - this is an old one but a goldie. By combining plants carefully, you can offer plants protection from the wind or sun, as well as helping to attract beneficial insects and ward off harmful insects. l Use Neem Oil as an organic insecticide for your garden. l Mow less - your lawn will actually require less water if you let it grow some. l Did you know small engines are incredibly inefficient and dirty. Running a leaf blow for one hour is equivalent to driving your car 350 miles!!! Rake or sweep - its better for you anyway. l Have your mower serviced - it will use less oil and fuel. l And of course compost! |

Dedication
to the Masters of the Lens Penn studied design at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art under Alexey Brodovitch from 1934 to 1938 and was then hired by Brodovitch as an assistant illustrator and art designer for Harper's Bazaar. He took time off to paint in Mexico and on his return began working at Vogue under the direction of the art director, Alexander Liberman. Although he was hired to develop cover ideas, Penn photographed his first cover for the October 1943 issue and continues to work with the magazine today. While Penn is well known for his fashion and celebrity portraiture, he has photographed many genres - still life, nudes, travel, ethnographic studies - and is meticulous in his presentation of his work including being a master printer He was one of the first photographers to pose subjects against a simple grey or white backdrop and used this simplicity more effectively than other photographers. He is a master of studio light however most of his portraits are lighted with window light. In 1950, Penn married his favorite model, Lisa Fonssagrives and in 1953 he founded his studio. The couple had one son together, named Tom and Lisa passed away in 1992. Penn has also published many books.
