An Urgent Call To Arms: Special Report

Photo News:

The winter months have been an exciting time here at the kennel. We just love the colours that come through with the autumnal colours and the fantastic clear winter mornings. Definitely a favourite time for photography, even if it can mean a few chilly mornings as we wait for that perfect sunrise.

And the BIG news is: After much searching Bluedog has found a spot in Brisbane that will serve as the new site for Bluedog Classes. We are scheduling the first Brisbane Classes into the August 2010 calendar! There’s a Bluedog class coming to a suburb near you.

Degree South : War Photography Exhibition certainly held plenty of inspiration and evoked plenty of strong emotions from those lucky enough to catch it at the Power House here in Brisbane. The work that war photographers do, not only in taking and presenting images but also in helping those on the ground, serve to remind us of how lucky we are living in such a comparatively safe country here in Australia. The tutors from Bluedog who went in for a look certainly felt the power of the images and the stories that went with them.

Danielle and Augustine each headed up to Hughenden in Queenslands north-west. Danielle went up to host a weekend of workshops for the local photography enthusiasts and Augustine followed a couple of weeks later to judge the photographs in the local show. Both would agree that the people of Hughenden sure do know how to make a person feel welcome.

The Bluedog Blog is certainly running hot with stories of Bluedog exploits and from the feedback we have been getting here at the kennel it seems to tickle a few funny bones as well. As we all know, photography is supposed to be fun and we are certainly looking to keep it that way when we fill the next blog instalment.

I Sadly the economics associated with running Bluedog has meant that we are having to revise our prices. The new financial year will see an increase of pricing across all of our courses.

I PSQ2010 convention is finished for another year and congratulations to the Brisbane Camera Group for a fantastic weekend of speakers and workshops. Next years convention is out to Goodiwindi for 2011. We will be there with Danielle asked to contribute as a speaker. Check out www.psqgoeswest2011.weebly.com/index.html for details as they unfold
.

I The facebook group is certainly proving to be a hit. On the discussion pages we see a lot of advice flowing back and forth and it is really gratifying to see our members helping each other by sharing knowledge and experiences.

Loved reading all the helpful advise you all have given Julie - well done, I feel like shoppingsays Anna after Julie wanted advice for her new camera purchase.

I The @Dusk workshops in Brisbane have now taken off with both Tony and Garry sharing their expertise in their different locations. We now have four different @Dusk experiences to offer in Brisbane, with everything from city photography to fantastic seascapes.

The next Stradbroke Island Tour is scheduled for the 25th-27th of July. Spaces are still available so for those looking for a unique and fun Stradbroke Island photographic experience get in quick!

Keep those fingers clicking and enjoy your photography!

Photo Tip: Cool Photography Apps

In this age where every second person seems to either have an iphone or is looking to get one I thought it would be appropriate to have a look at one of the handiest iphone apps I have found in ages – Photocalc.

I have searched and downloaded quite a few apps for photography onto my iphone and would have to say this is one of the best.

Primarily Photocalc has 4 main widgets that make photography calculations a snap.

The depth of field calculator allows you to enter the focal length, aperture and subject distance for your specific camera and it will calculate the near and far limits of your zone of sharp focus, the total depth of field, hyperfocal distance and the size of the circles of confusion. Very handy when you are wanting to ensure you have the correct aperture to ensure all of your elements are in focus.

There is also a handy sunrise tool that uses your location and supplies the times for sunrise, solar noon, sunset and even gives the hours of twilight for that “magic hour” photography we all love so much.

The exposure reciprocation tool takes the 3 main elements of good exposure (aperture, ISO and shutter speed) and by locking one of these to get the desired affect, the tool will give you alternative options for the other 2 to ensure you maintain good exposure.

Cleverly they have also included a tool that works much the same as the exposure tool but includes flash to the mix giving details of the settings so that you have exposed correctly for flash photography.

Not only are all of these handy tools included but there is also a reference section that covers additional photographic gems like the sunny F16 rule and a glossary of photographic terms.

All in all I’d have to say that this is a dynamic tool that definitely constitutes the best $3.99 I have yet spent on my photography. For those out there that have a passion for DSLR photography and have a phone that will take apps I would highly recommend this small but mighty investment.

Photo Trivia: Did You Know?

World's Most Expensive Camera!

WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE CAMERA

http://www.kameraklub.co.za/images/daguerreotype%20giroux.jpg

The final hammer has just fallen at the 17th WestLicht Photographica Auction in Vienna, Austria, and there's a new "World's Most Expensive Camera" - an 1839 Daguerreotype Giroux (above) was sold for almost $900,000. It is the most ever paid for a camera. Alphonse Giroux was the brother-in-law of Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, inventor of the Daguerreotype - and generally credited as the primary inventor of photography, although the full story is far more interesting.

Bluedog's Product Review

Slik Pro II GM Tripod

We have been trialling the SPRINT PRO II GM over the past few months and are happy to say we have added it to our travel arsenal!

Designed to travel, the SPRINT PRO II GM is a compact tripod with 4 legs sections to collapse down to 480mm and weighs just 890grams.

An updated version of the popular SLIK SPRINT PRO series the new SPRINT PRO II GM (gun metal finish) has padded leg wraps for more comfortable carrying. The new tripod also has a new SLIK SBH-100DQ all-metal compact ball head with quick release system for faster, easier mounting of a camera.

The SPRINT PRO II GM is a full sized tripod when it is extended to its maximum height of almost 1.63 metres. The adjustable legs angles can be used to splay the legs out and lower the tripod. When used with the built-in short center column, (the included center column unscrews into two pieces) the camera is just 175mm off the ground for extremely low angle or macro photography out in the field. Another way to get the camera low is to reverse the center column which could be used for macro photography or copy work.ve.' And yes we have found this so. There are many pluses and few minuses to this bag and one that will be staying in our kit. We'll be writing a blog with more images as there are many more benefits to this for the traveller then first meets the eye.

We are so impressed with this mighty little tripod that we are now stocking it through CR Kennedy for purchase at Bluedog Workshops.

An Urgent Call To Arms

A CALL TO ACTION!!!!!!!!

"THOSE WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO TAKE ACTION - HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE ACTION"..... Benjamin Franklin

Did you know that in Melbourne, a bridal car parked in a laneway etc for wedding photographs, can automatically incure a $400 fine and three demerit points to the driver?
Did you know that it is illegal to take photographs using the Sydney Opera House as a backdrop for wedding photographs?

"I personally am sick of these uninformed bureaucratic stupid regulations from councils, that clearly have no basis on anything except a feeble attempt to extract money from ordinary ratepayers." said Bernie Griffiths. I have been a wedding /portrait photographer for forty years and will be joining the rally. It is time to take responsibility with action.

Australian photographers are losing their rights to freedom of expression. And it doesn't matter whether they are full-time professional, part-time or strictly amateur, as every person who has a camera can be threatened with unjust laws and regulations.

“We must be the only country in the world where you could get a criminal record for taking a picture of a rock,” said Ken Duncan, the Chairman of Arts Freedom Australia.“And because of this shameful situation, I am asking photographers and other concerned citizens to protest against the undemocratic regulations which now restrict film-making and photography in many of our public places,” Mr Duncan added.

To this end, Arts Freedom Australia (AFA) will hold a rally near Campbells Cove on Sydney Harbour on Sunday, August 29th between 10am and 12 noon to reinforce its message. “We need to make the Australian public aware of this threat to our freedoms,” Mr Duncan said.
More info http://www.artsfreedomaustralia.com/blog/?p=99

This issue has become such a force of concern that within the PSQ2010 convention Earle Bridger from Queensland College of Art spoke for over an hour on the rights of photographers and how we actually still have them (although often people in positions of authority feel that this is not the case). Indeed, in Brisbane alone five photography students have been arrested in the last two years while pursuing street photography projects for their assignments.

Recently a prominent Australian photographer was stopped on the streets of Cairns where he was taking some shots and informed that to continue to take his shots he had to pay the council a fee. The images this person takes are used in both national and international media campaigns and one should question the reasoning beyond money garnering for such ridiculous impositions.

Any photographer deemed to be a professional is no longer allowed to shoot Uluru whereas an amateur can take as many shots as they please. Professional photographers have to pay a fee to take photographs in our National Parks. Where will it end?

How many of you know that in Queensland it is perfectly legal to photograph on the beach? How many of you out there have been approached and told you cannot?

The time has come to stand up and be counted and through the website listed above people can find others who are hoping for rallies in their own cities. I know that in Brisbane the Brisbane Camera Group is looking for interested people. Contact Julie through info@brisbanecameragroup.org.au
