Bluedog Photography Weekend Retreat May 10
Friday evening:
6pm -Meet
and greet at Cafe Ella for dinner included in reteat package.
After dinner return to the Bluedog Studio for coffee and an
overview of weekend ahead, introduction of tutors and PowerPoint presentation
"Masters of the Lens". Non photography partners welcome at cost of dinner.
Saturday:
6.00am: Sunrise shoot at lookout – Refer to map Sunrise 6.26am
8.15am: Meet at Bluedog Studio
8.30am – 9.00am: Overview of Day and PowerPoint Presentation ‘Find the Angle’
9.00 – 9.15am: Travel to Tamborine Heritage Centre Map Ref: N 18
9.15am – 11.15am: Find the Angle at Tamborine Heritage Centre
The Heritage Centre is open specially for our group and here we can wonder through the displays (yes the barriers are taken down for us) refining our techniques.
Exercises:
- 1. Choose one subject and photograph it with a variety of frames, angles, distances between camera and subject, height of camera, tilt of camera, etc. Work the idea thoroughly but only by changing frame, nothing else.
- 2. Try taking at least one abstract photo based on either using the triangle; rhythm, lead lines, negative space, rule of thirds.
Remember – keep it simple; get in close and be creative!
11.15am - 11.30am Travel to studio
11.30 – 12.00 pm: Presentation on ‘Portraiture with texture, shape and form.’
12.00 – 1.00pm Lunch (provided in reteat packaget) and download time
1.00 - 1.30pm: Travel to Sculpture Garden
1.30pm – 3.00pm: Photography in sculpture garden including the opportunity to do an environmental portrait of famous sculpture artist, Antone Bruinsma, at work. Here participants will get the chance to work on the art of environmental portraiture first perfected by the great Arnold Newman. Texture Shape & Form using natural lighting.
3.00pm – 3.30pm: Travel from sculpture Garden
3.30pm – 4.30pm: Free time to download and prepare for dinner
4.30pm: Sunset Shoot.
Meet at hang gliders lookout for sunset shoot – sunset 5.03pm. Map Re: D 12 at location 7
Topics covered: use of filters, hyperfocal distance, white balance, histograms.
A glass of complimentary wine will be served
Non photography partners welcome.
5.30pm - 6.00pm: Informal time at Cafe Ella to discuss days work
6.00pm: Cafe Ella for dinner. Non photography partners welcome at cost of dinner
8.30pm: A night walk in the rainforest or if weather is not suitable some relaxing time in front of the log fire and listening to Irish music at the historic Clancy’s Irish Bar.
Sunday
6.00am: Sunrise shoot at lookout – Refer to map Sunrise 6.26am.
8.30am: Arrive Bluedog Studio; Participants to hand in images from Saturday for crit session
8.30am - 9.00am Travel to rainforest walk
9.00am – 10.30.am: Rainforest Walk
Practise macro techniques, aperture, composition, using a polariser in the forest, shutter speed and white balance.
Exercises:
- 1. Use your polariser in the rainforest against foliage and see what effect it has. Take the same photo polarised and unpolarised – what do you notice; what happens to your meter readings and why?
- 2. Look up, look down, look all around. Look for the tiny details, patterns in the foliage, contrasting colours.
- 3. Experiment with light – hold a leaf up to the light can you capture the veins
- 4. Find texture, shape and form
- 5. Take the same scene using different white balance settings
10.30am – 10.45am: Travel to Bluedog Studio for Morning Tea
10.45 -11.15am Morning Tea (provided)
11.15am – 11.30am: Travel to Markets
11.30 -12.30am: “An hour of Creativity – “Shooting from the Hip”
You have one hour to wander through the markets and capture an image as either:
- 1. A Metaphor – that is the object stands for something else. A few ideas: a tree could be the tree of life, a moon the mother of creation; an apple for the apple of my eye
- 2. An image that depicts an emotion: love, happiness, anger, loneliness, lust, peace, comfort, courage, envy, hope, zest, sadness are just a few!
12.30pm – 12.45pm Travel to Bluedog Studio for Lunch (provided)
12.45pm – 1.30pm: Lunch at Bluedog Studio
1.30pm - 2.00pm: Demonstration of processing digital images through i-correct
2.00pm - 3.00pm; Participants prepare images for crit or an option is travel to Botanic Gardens
for an exercise: Capture the Essence of autumn
3.30 - 4.00pm: Break
4.00 – 5.00pm: PowerPoint presentation of Participants Work - constructive critique of work.
Bluedog Studio
Finish, handing out of statements of attendance and farewells. Non photography partners welcome.

If weather plays a part in not being able to accomplish a part of the programe (not including the sunrise and night walk) alternative activities will be scheduled. |
