About the Bulloo: The Bulloo Shire covers a massive 74,000 km2. Orange sand dunes, purple flickering gibbers, astounding river systems, unique National Parks - it is all found here in the third largest Shire in Queensland, Australia. The first documented European explorers to the area were Burke and Wills. Pastoral leases were quickly taken up and since then industry has grown and diversified. Organic beef cattle fatten along the floodplains of the channel country, across the stony downs and among the spinifex and sand dunes. Sheep graze beside busy bees collecting Yapunyah nectar. Opal miners seek their fortune fossicking for the illustrious boulder opal whilst National Parks protect extraordinary inland wetlands. Gas and oil exploration in the ‘70’s saw Australia’s largest onshore oil field being established at Jackson Oil Field. Nearby Bellara Gas Centre pipes gas across the continent. Out
Around the Bulloo - an area of immense beauty, history and
culture. |
